Offer a compromise

Sometimes it is necessary to show the reader that your argument is not extreme or unreasonable. You can do this by explaining how your side would be willing to compromise on the issue.

Example: With the technology that is now available, it is possible to create beverage containers that decompose at a much quicker pace than plastic bottles. A ban on plastic bottles would drive the market for decomposable bottles up, and industry would be forced to change.

Using your own sample argument, offer a compromise to your reader by commenting below.

  1. With more people comes more demand for good health. With the economy crisis comes more demand for lower health insurance. Lowering health insurance would benefit and help people get health care when they need it.

  2. Preventing the disease can be easy as one, two, three. Washing your hands with warm soap and water, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and staying at home when your sick are all possibilities to prevent this deadly pandemic.

With many pharmaceutical companies experimenting with vaccines for the swine flu, it is becoming easier to prevent it. Keeping clean will help many others.

With the abundance of resources nowadays, universal health care is achievable--but only if we all work together. Health care will make the world both safe and peaceful.

  6. Inevitably, it will be difficult to pass a uniform smoke-free law that applies to all 50 American states. Some will object one way and others will advocate for even harsher laws.
However, it is possible to achieve the desired goal of maintaining America's health by allowing exceptions to the law. For example, allowing people to smoke inside a building, but only in a special room that is created and reserved for them. However, the law would still apply across the nation.

There's nothing wrong with the iPhone itself, but the fact that humans have decided to use them to the extreme to create a fast-paced world. We go into this cycle of doing things to save time, but then just use the save time to do even more. What a life right?

Sure, we all could let some Matadors know that their stress and schedule can be dangerous. However, we shouldn't take it to the extreme of "Monta Vista is nothing more than a bunch of Asians who are striving to make it into Stanford."

Going back in time is not as bad as it sounds. Students can handwrite their work, teachers can give more time allowing students to work. Yeah, people say technology helps the world move forward, but too much of something is not always good.

Obviously, some people depend on drugs for necessary treatments, such as therapy for cancer. However, many people become too dependent even after they don't need the drugs anymore. If needed, use the drugs, but not to the extent that you dedicate your life to them.

There are multiple scientists and doctors who should realize that swine flu is not as big of a deal as they make it out to be. With more and more people who know that it is good to take precautions and better to be safe than sorry, but who *understand* that it is not as much of a problem as people say it is, the better life will be for everyone.

  14. Instead we must work towards effectively training and preparing Iraqi police in a methodical way. We should invest the time and money NOW, so that we can withdraw our troops and pursue the terrorists, then. WE must leave Iraq knowing that they can and must stand on their own, while doing our job protecting our nation.

There is nothing wrong with gum and sunflower seeds, but the choice that we take to stick them on furniture and other surfaces IS wrong. The school should limit the amount of gum allowed on campus by making a rule that gum should be banned in classrooms.

With all the technology that is now available, it is possible to provide resources for students who might have financial limitations, in order to encompass entire classes in the enriching experience. Schools can integrate these resources into more than student education as well, by offering it to teachers to communicate easily and share resources with their peers, locally as well as at a larger scale, by communicating with teachers and professionals around the world.

  20. It isn't that hard to make a test designed for individual use. In fact, it's easier to grade, and easier for students to take. And most important of all, it allows for a true, proper measurement of someone's knowledge of the subject of the test.

  21. There are no concrete guildlines in how to be the best leader. Leadership should be something that the individual believes is best for their society. We are all mature enough to decide whether small mistakes like wearing the wrong socks are big enough to overthrow the bigger issues of what the future leader really believes in.

  22. Reducing traffic on Wednesdays is as simple as switching the schedules of Wednesday and another day. Last year, Monta Vista removed late start from Tuesday. If we were able to make a schedule change before, then we can definitely make one again.

  23. The school day wouldn't be any shorter, because we would end it later in the day. Nothing about our schedule would have to change except the first and last bell. All starting later in the day does is allow students to get more sleep, and in turn do better in school.

If we take control, think about the pressure that would be token off you shoulders. Maybe we can live normal student lives, but still be realized that Monta Vista is a good school and we can still get into Yale or UC or wherever you want to go. You won't have to go to stanford for you sweet sixteen to pick out classes. And you won't be under the pressure of taking Pre Calculus Sophomore year. If we take control of the competitiveness we could lift some of the weight off of our shoulders.

  27. With the freedom that teenagers enjoy these days, it's not so easy to enforce rules like parents could do when their children were five years old. Offer a compromise on the universal issues, such as letting your teen date but having a strict curfew of 11 pm. Or 10. Or 9 if you're really picky.

Buying a hybrid may not always be possible, however; people may not have the money, and the car simply may not fit the needs of the purchaser. In that case, people should consider small to mid-sized cars, instead of SUVs and trucks. They still give off more emissions than a hybrid, but not as much as gas guzzlers.

Protecting oneself doesn't mean more stress and worry on one's part, doctors and scientists are doing everything they can to find out about this flu. A simple compromise for their hard work in research is to just stay safe so more deaths will not occur.

  31. Just because we are telling you to save energy, it doesn't mean you can't use a computer, drive a car, or live in darkness. Turning off the computer when you aren't using it, driving a hybrid or carpooling with a friend, and whenever lights are not needed just turning them off will help the environment a bunch.

Although we are attempting to instill tolerance and adjustment to issues in our society, we are not saying that bearing failure in a situation of pure injustice is the right thing to do. If there is a faulty factor leading to your failure, then speak out against it, but know how to get your point across without making matters worse.

They should all talk to the doctor and find a way that they can stay at a good weight and set up the diet. They can plan a diet in which they get all their nutrients through healthy foods and avoid extra fats. The girl should also talk to healthy makeup brands, such as Clinique or Neutrogena, and find a makeup routine that will help their skin yet make them look how they would like to.

  36. Honestly, we are not that far off. Gay marriage is legalized in some states and civil unions are very similar, but in order to reach the level of equality that homosexuals deserve, marriage must be legalized. It will not affect you as a straight person in any way, it will just allow homosexuals to tie the spiritual knot in addition to the legal one.

We are not saying that schools should stray from budget cuts, but they should probably have a more gradual transition into the economic crisis. Schools in Florida can be examples for East San Jose schools to appeal to the feelings of students instead of managing purely on the mind of the economy.
