Cite an expert

Sometimes it is perfectly acceptable to use quotations in your editorial (though far fewer than you would in a news or feature story). If there is an expert whose statement(s) support your claim, you may want to cite that expert.

Example: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, “While much tap water is indeed risky, having compared available data, we conclude that there is no assurance that bottled water is any safer than tap water.”

Using your own sample argument, use an expert for support by commenting below.

  7. Famous musician Frank Zappa once said, "The United States is a nation of laws--badly written, and randomly enforced."
Zappa's critical statement is true to an extent. Each year laws are passed and statutes are created to protect bystanders from the harms of secondhand smoking...yet so many will end up useless because of their lack of detail and enforcement.
Take for example research provided by the American Lung Association. In 2007, California passed numerous codes prohibiting the usage of tobacco products in all public places. Yet at the end of a code that regulated tobacco usage in health facilities, it said: "Patients in long term health care facilities are exempt from this law." Ultimately, it was still okay to smoke in a health facility, in front of patients--in front of people trying to recover!

The normal flu is much more deadly than the swine flu. The Centers for Disease Control estimates 36,000 people die annually in the United States from the regular flu, as compared to the (approximately) 948 people who die of the swine flu every year.
